The Pilot Pro 8X Infrared Monocular is one of the best entry-level night vision devices that money can buy. It can see in complete darkness, zoom hundreds of feet, and has full onboard media recording capabilities.

The Pilot Pro achieves night vision functionality by using a sensor optimized for the near-infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. While humans and animals can not see the light in this part of the spectrum, devices like the Pilot Pro absolutely can.

This sort of device, known by some as digital night vision, can be used for a number of applications but is most commonly used for nature observation, hiking, security, photography, property surveillance, stargazing, construction, and virtually any form of outdoor recreation.

This model comes equipped with a number of proprietary firmware and hardware upgrades that make it particularly unique. It features an integrated lithium-ion battery, a true glass optic (3X magnification) with amazing light transmission properties, 10X computer aided zoom, and digital crosshairs.

Because the Pilot Pro is a magnified optic, it is important to be mindful of the field-of-view curve. The Pilot Pro has a minimum practical observation distance of approximately 15 feet. If you're interested in something with a much wider field-of-view, consider taking a look at a night vision monocular like the IRIS.

Performance Disclaimer*

The performance of any night vision device is highly contingent on present atmospheric conditions. Variables like cloud coverage, moonlight, starlight, and proximity to urban light pollution can have a dramatic impact on performance. Image properties like brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness can all be influenced by these variables. To produce the best image possible, the user should use his or her best judgement to adjust the range and the strength of the illuminator as needed.

Pretty good product for price.

It works really well, and does what it says. The veiw finder is manual. Once you get used to using the buttons it's a fun camera to use. Great gift for a young adventurer.

Actually works

Color me surprised, this thing actually works. The field of view is dog doodoo! Minimum distance you can use this at is like 10 feet but the infrared works phenomenally. For the price it’s well worth it

Works

Build quality doesn’t feel the best, but I found a 2K UHD video mode in the settings, and the resolution is outstanding. The FPS is definitely a bit lower but I’m amazed that this feature isn’t advertised anywhere. The problem is that the screen unfortunately isn’t good enough to really display the full clarity of what the Pilot pro can record so you have to export it to something bigger to see it correctly.

Wish it viewed farther distance.

Great little device

It's a pretty neat monocular. There are a few things to keep in mind with this:

1. it's entirely digital. you can't physically see through it like a traditional glass optic. It has to be turned on otherwise it isn't usable.
2. it's optically magnified so the field-of-view is fairly narrow. at a distance of about 10 feet, the actual square of visibility you get is around a 6x6 inch patch
3. the advertising shows a circular night vision shot, similar to a telescope, but as far as I can tell, this pilot pro only produces a rectangular image, so I am not sure where they are getting that from.

With that being said, it works well, and definitely has a "wow" factor the first time you use it. The optimal range is around 40 feet. I think you can get away with more depending on atmospheric conditions but at 40 feet is really where all the image properties converge and are at their best. The resolution is razor sharp, the illumination is strong, and you have minimal image distortion from reflections.

I tried using it at a distance of 300 feet across a field and it was difficult. It's not so much that the device can't physically see at that distance, but rather the illuminator itself doesn't project that far, so unless you have amazing atmospheric conditions then the device really isn't usable at that distance.

Overall, it's solid as far as digital night vision goes.
