With the recent boom in emergency preparedness, consumers all over the world are looking for ways to maximize the utility of their every day carry products. Fortunately for TakLite customers, our new TA-50 LED Flashlight is able do a little bit more than one might expect.
Char cloth, also known as char paper, is a fiber-based swatch of fabric with an extremely low ignition point. It's essentially a form of fuel. Similar to gasoline, char cloth just burns and will continue to do so even in less-than-ideal conditions such as wind or rain. It's small, lightweight, and can easily fit in your wallet.
Traditionally, flashlight enthusiasts were able to use char cloth to start campfires by removing the reflector bowls inside their flashlights and using it as a magnifying glass of sorts. While this method certainly does work, it's not quite the same technique we use.
Thanks to the power of modern day tactical flashlights, the intense heat emitted is actually enough to ignite char cloth. No magnifying glass or reflector is needed. While most would argue that this is largely a novel feature, it does provide some practical uses for survivalists. Rest assured, char cloth is the only type of fabric this will work on.
Once you have your burning piece of char cloth, you need to apply it to a tinder bundle. Voila! You created a campfire using nothing more than a flashlight and a piece of char cloth. Now, we do want to warn you, we went through two different char cloth brands before we found one that worked. You will also want to make sure your battery voltage is fully charged.
The nominal voltage of 18650 lithium-ion cells is 3.7v but the actual functional range goes from 2.7v all the way up to 4.2v depending on state of charge. You will want the voltage to be above 4 so aim for at least a 90% state of charge.
